At Icebreaker Holdings LLC ("we", "us", or "our"), your privacy is not an afterthought — it is foundational to how the app works. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Icebreaker, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information you provide directly
- Account information: Your email address, first name, date of birth, and password when you create an account.
- Profile information: Photos you upload (up to six), bio, opener prompt, gender, sexual orientation, occupation, hometown, height, interests and hobbies, the kind of relationship you are looking for, who you are interested in meeting ("show me" setting), and your preferred age range and discovery radius.
- Verification selfie: A live selfie captured during the identity check before each live session. This image is stored securely and used solely to confirm that the person going live matches the profile photos. It is retained until you delete your account, at which point it is permanently removed.
- Communications: Messages sent between matched users inside the app, and any support communications you send to us.
- Reports: If you report another user, we collect the report category, any note you choose to add, and the conversation or context you reported from.
- Settings and preferences: Choices you make in the in-app Settings screen, including your notification preferences for icebreakers, messages, match confirmations, session updates, and reminders; a "Do Not Disturb" toggle that silences message pushes while you are offline; a photo-privacy toggle that restricts non-matched users' view of your additional photos; and your saved discovery filters (who you are interested in, age range, and radius).
1.2 Information collected automatically
- Location data: Precise GPS coordinates when you are in an active live session. This is required for the core discovery feature and is only collected while you have explicitly gone live. We do not track your location in the background.
- Device information: Device type, operating system, app version, platform identifier (e.g. iOS, Android), and a Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) token used to deliver push notifications to your device.
- Usage data: Interactions within the app including screens viewed, features used, and session durations. This is used to improve the product.
- Log data: IP address, timestamps, and server-side error logs for security and stability purposes.
1.3 Information from third parties
- Firebase (Google): We use Firebase for authentication, database, file storage, cloud functions, and push notifications. Firebase may collect certain technical identifiers as part of these services. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- Apple App Store and Google Play: When you make an in-app purchase, the transaction is processed by Apple (on iOS) or Google (on Android). We receive a transaction identifier and a receipt token from the store, but we do not receive or store your payment card information. See Apple's Privacy Policy and Google's Privacy Policy.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and maintain your account, and verify your identity.
- Power the live discovery feature — showing your profile to compatible, nearby users when you choose to go live.
- Enable mutual-interest connections and in-app messaging between matched users.
- Send you push notifications related to icebreakers you receive, new messages, confirmed matches, live-session events, and reminders such as an icebreaker that is about to expire. You can turn each category on or off independently from in-app Settings, or opt out entirely from your device's notification settings.
- Process in-app purchases, credit your account with the items you bought, and prevent the same purchase from being credited twice.
- Enforce our Terms of Service and protect the safety of our community, including investigating reports of abuse and enforcing user blocks.
- Improve and maintain the app experience through internal product diagnostics.
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your data to serve third-party advertising.
3. Location Data
Icebreaker is a proximity-based app. When you choose to go live, we collect your precise GPS coordinates to determine which other live users are within your chosen discovery radius (30–60 metres). This data is:
- Only collected while you are actively in a live session.
- Written to a secure Firestore database accessible only by your account and our backend systems.
- Deleted or marked stale when your live session ends.
- Never shared with third parties beyond the Firebase infrastructure we use to operate the service.
Other users see only your general proximity — not your exact coordinates. We do not store a historical location log.
4. How We Share Your Information
We share your information only in the following circumstances:
- With other users: Your public profile (first name, age, photos, bio, opener prompt, hometown, occupation, height, interests, and the kind of relationship you are looking for) is visible to other live users who match your filters within your discovery radius when you are live. Your exact location, email address, and date of birth are never shown to other users.
- Service providers: We share data with Firebase/Google to operate the app. These providers are contractually bound to handle your data securely and only as instructed.
- Payment processors: When you buy credits or other in-app items, the purchase itself is processed by Apple (on iOS) or Google (on Android). We share the product identifier and account identifier needed to deliver what you bought; the store handles your payment details directly.
- Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required to do so by law, court order, or governmental authority, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Icebreaker or others.
- Business transfer: If Icebreaker is acquired by or merged with another company, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via email or in-app notice before this occurs.
5. In-App Purchases
Icebreaker offers consumable virtual items — currently Icebreaker credits, Live Session credits, and bundles of those items. Purchases are completed through the Apple App Store on iOS and Google Play on Android, and all payment information is handled by those stores under their own terms and privacy policies. We never see or store your credit card number, billing address, or other payment details.
For each successful purchase we record:
- The platform (Apple or Google), the product identifier of the item you bought, and the store-issued transaction identifier.
- The receipt token returned by the store, which we keep so we can verify that the same purchase is never credited twice and so we can validate authenticity if a dispute arises.
- The number of credits granted and the timestamp the purchase was applied to your account.
Purchase records are retained for as long as we are required to keep them for tax, accounting, and fraud-prevention purposes, even after your account is deleted. They are not used for any purpose other than processing your purchase and meeting our legal obligations.
Refunds and cancellations for in-app purchases are handled by Apple or Google, not by us. See Apple's refund process or Google Play's refund process.
6. Safety, Blocking, and Reports
To keep the community safe, Icebreaker maintains records of safety actions you take and that are taken about you:
- Blocks: When you block another user, we record who blocked whom, when, and from where in the app (for example, from chat or from a profile). This record is used to make sure the two of you no longer see each other in discovery, chat, or other surfaces. Blocks can be released later, and a release is recorded as well.
- Reports: When you submit a report about another user, we record the reporter, the reported user, the reason category, any note you wrote, and the source (e.g. nearby, chat, or profile). Reports are reviewed by our team and may be used to issue warnings, suspend accounts, or remove users from the Service.
- Verification attempts: Each time you complete the live selfie check before going live, we record that the check happened and which method was used. This audit trail helps us prevent abuse of the verification system.
Block and report records are retained as long as needed to enforce our Terms of Service and to protect the safety of other users. They may persist after the account that created them is deleted, in anonymised form, when needed for ongoing safety enforcement.
7. Data Retention
- Account data: Retained while your account is active. Deleted within 30 days of account deletion.
- Location data: Live session coordinates are cleared when a session ends. No persistent location history is maintained.
- Photos and verification selfies: Retained while your account is active. Deleted within 30 days of account deletion.
- Messages and matches: Retained while both accounts are active. All messages, conversations, and match records involving your account are deleted when your account is deleted.
- Purchase records: Retained for as long as required by tax, accounting, and fraud-prevention obligations, even after account deletion.
- Reports and safety records: Retained for up to 3 years, or longer if needed to enforce our Terms or protect users.
8. Security
We implement industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (TLS), Firebase Security Rules that restrict data access to authorised users only, and backend-enforced logic for sensitive operations. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. If you discover a security vulnerability, please contact us at icebreaker.support@gmail.com.
9. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:
- Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: Update inaccurate profile information directly in the app, or contact us for account-level corrections.
- Deletion: Delete your account from the app settings. We will delete your data within 30 days.
- Portability: Request an export of your data in a common format.
- Objection / restriction: Object to certain processing or request that we restrict processing of your data.
- Withdraw consent: You can turn off location access in your device settings at any time, which will prevent you from using the live discovery feature.

10. Children's Privacy
Icebreaker is not intended for anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If you believe a minor has created an account, please contact us immediately and we will delete the account.
11. International Data Transfers
Icebreaker is operated from the United States. If you are accessing the app from outside the US, your data may be transferred to and processed in the US or other countries where our service providers operate. By using the app, you consent to this transfer.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. If we make material changes, we will notify you via in-app notice or email at least 7 days before the changes take effect. The updated date at the top of this page reflects when the policy was last revised.
